Carrshield Camping Barn - Dog Friendly Camping Barn in Hexham, Northumberland
Carrshield Camping Barn is an independent hostel (part of the Independent Hostel network) located within the former Barney Craig Mine Shop. This used to be the largest mine shop in south Northumberland. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was at risk of collapsing beyond repair.
With funding from Historic England and the Heritage Lottery Fund the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership renovated the building using traditional methods and existing materials, converting the upper floors into a basic Camping Barn. It is now owned and managed by Allen Valleys Enterprise Limited, for the benefit of the local community.
The Carrshield Camping Barn is the upper floor of 18th Century Barney Craig Mine Shop located just outside Carrshield in Northumberland. It has accommodation for up to 18 people in three separate rooms, each with a wood-burning stove and a raised wooden sleeping platform. The rooms are individually secure, but can be interconnected, making it ideal for larger or mixed groups.
Duck – sleeps 8
Lapwing - sleeps 6
Curlew - sleeps 4
Facilities

Shared toilets + cooking area
Composting toilet.
Communal 'galley' room for cooking with stone benches for your own stoves to sit on.
Running hot and cold water for hand-washing in the toilet/kitchen area. (no food waste should go down the waste please as it is pipe as it is a water soak away not a proper full drain).

The Carrshield Camping Barn is located in one of England’s most special places – a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, welcoming communities, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, distinctive birds, animals and plants and much, much more. In recognition of its special qualities the area has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The North Pennines is also a UNESCO Global Geopark – highlighting its globally important Earth heritage.
