Hydrotherapy
The definition of hydrotherapy is a physiotherapy programme utilising properties of water.  The programme should be specified for a patient to maximise physical function.  Either by rehabilitating due to injury, medical condition or operation, or for performance enhancement, for example, an agility dog or a working gun dog.

Working in water is either controlled or non-weight bearing and therefore has low impact on any joints. Which enables the patient to work a bit harder without causing too much distress on the joints/muscles.

Physiotherapist
Paula qualified as a human physiotherapist in 1994 and undertook further training to specialise in treating animals in 2005. I am a member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy. Physiotherapy for animals can be beneficial for a variety of conditions including post operative orthopaedic conditions, fractures, osteoarthritis, neurological problems, sporting and soft tissue/joint injuries, spinal conditions or performance problems in the working or sporting dog. Physiotherapy enhances the recovery process and aims to enable the dog to return to full function. Veterinary permission must be gained before physiotherapy treatment can begin.

I will assess the dog fully on the initial consultation and discuss a treatment plan with the owner. Treatment can include exercises, mobilisations, soft tissue work, electrotherapy and advice. Physiotherapy works well in conjunction with hydrotherapy to improve the wellbeing of the dog.
