Nestled in the picturesque countryside of East Hampshire, Chawton House is famously described as the ‘Great House’ by Jane Austen, who lived in the village and frequently visited the estate to call upon her brother Edward Austen Knight and his family. The House and Gardens are now open to the public and we look forward to welcoming you and your dog on a visit.

No matter the season, the grounds and gardens here at Chawton House offer something beautiful for you to explore and enjoy. Marvel at the delicate snowdrops and beautiful bluebells in Spring before exploring the sweet-smelling roses in the midst of Summer. Take in the deep reds and oranges of Autumn in the Wilderness and the undisturbed views across the parkland in the depths of Winter.

Looking for a longer walk? Why not enjoy one of our wider estate walks across the parkland surrounding Chawton House? Enjoy views of the House as you walk and maybe even stop for a picnic. For those walking the parkland with children, we have worksheets and trails available to download on our website to help keep little ones entertained as you explore.

Sit down and enjoy something tasty in our Courtyard Tearoom or get something to take away from our Tea Shed.

Dogs are welcome in all outdoor spaces, including our Courtyard Tearoom. We do ask that dogs are kept on leads when visiting Chawton House and the wider estate.
