The Labrador Rescue Trust was originally set up towards the end of 1988 by a number of Labrador enthusiasts who cared very deeply about the well-being of the breed. The organisation was initially known as Labrador Rescue (South West) and was granted charitable status in Fenruary 1993. Although based in the South West of England, the Charity was granted National Status by the Charity Commission as we would help a Labrador in need from any part of the United Kingdom, if necessary.

We now have over 100 volunteer Helpers who give up a great deal of their time to Labrador Rescue. Our aim is to rescue Labradors who are in need of new homes for whatever reason and to rehome them into genuine, caring homes. At all times, the welfare of the dog is paramount.

In order to do this, Helpers are organised into six teams by area, each team having an Area Coordinator. Our Helpers visit each potential home, as well as visiting and assessing the needs of each dog, submitting reports to each of their Area Coordinators. From these reports, the Area Coordinator endeavours to match suitable dogs to suitable homes and then puts the appropriate Helpers in touch with one another to discuss the possible "match". If the Helpers consider that the dog and home are compatible, the the re-homing takes place. Area Coordinators are in touch with each other regarding dogs and homes that are available so that, for example, a dog from Cornwall could be rehomed in Wiltshire.
