One of my favourite walks, a stone throw from home in New Mills is Kinder Scout in Hayfield Derbsyhire, there are a number of walks you can do from this village including Mount Famine and Shining Torr, Kinder is the popular one.

As dog walker I tend to shy away from taking the doggies up there its a huge walk can take up to four hours, plus another huge problem is the peskie sheep, that despite efforts made still roam at the very top of Kinder.

Many different paths to the top we tend to avoid the busy touristy ones and head up kind of the middle of the mountain, first through boggy meadows, then you gradually head up and there is a lower plateau before the top which is full of rocks and old stone wheels from its mining passed the rocks are all sorts for crazy shapes, eventually you reach the top and kinder is as flat as pancake on top, grassy in places some huge rocks in places and a lot of black peat, we always veer to the left and head towards Kinder Down Fall.

We then scramble down ( no marked paths) towards Mermaids Pool, a little lake after that you can join a path that leads through a small woodland you follow the river along and eventually a path lead you around the opposite side of the reservoir than we started on.

And of course most times after spending half the late afternoon up Kinder we head to the Sportsman inn just outside of Hayfield, a very dog friendly pub.
