Borrowdale Ramble

Keswick
Cumbria
  • Enjoy Cumbria without stile struggles
  • Low level and relatively flat walk
  • Guidebooks for BIG dog owners

Begin the walk from Seatoller NT car park (toilets here), head up the path leading through Johnny Wood then drop down a steep slope to a path through a gate. Turn right. Go through a gate into Borrowdale Youth Hostel campsite and follow the wall to your left to the bridge. Turn left again follow the riverside path to a large stone bridge.

Do not cross but follow the path to another gate and follow the river Derwent Northwards following the large path to enter High Hows Wood. Follow this being careful of a rocky section just after the caves which is easy but can be slippy. Follow the path to the river again then after passing through a gate turn left again before a footbridge and head up the path towards Castle Crag.

Once at the top you may wish to visit the crag via a path on the left - there's no stiles but it's quite steep and the slate is slippy when wet. Otherwise continue straight on heading South along the bridleway to a bridge at Lavery Gill which is a fab place for lunch. Continue South passing High Doat on your left and carry on along the bridleway until you reach a wall with gates to your left and in front of you.

Go left and head down the hill past a small coppice then down a stony bridleway back to Seatoller. Full description, map and GPS routes for this and other fabulous Lake District dog walks are available in Misty's Mini Guides, guidebooks for big dog owners looking for great hikes without the stile struggles! Available on Amazon and selected local stores.
