The Old House

The Old House - Dog Friendly Accommodation In  Arichastlich, Argyll and Bute

In Glen Orchy, one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens, Arichastlich (The Old House) lies in splendid isolation. Huge beech trees planted by the Earl of Breadalbane still protect the property. The solitude and uninterrupted views give The Old House enormous appeal. The River Orchy, famous for its salmon, runs the length of the glen. The lack of traffic allows you to hear the sound of silence.

In traditional stone, The Old House was originally built by the Earl of Breadalbane as a peaceful fishing lodge in the early 1800’s. It has been totally renovated by the owners, the Kerrs, who live in the adjacent house. There are now excellent modern facilities within ancient stone walls, including a fully equipped kitchen and spacious rooms. The property, overlooking the River Orchy, is suitable for a couple, for family holidays, or for sabbatical study use. It can be an ideal base for botanists, geologists, ornithologists, fishermen and walkers. In the complete absence of light pollution, the night sky can be quite breathtaking.

On a quiet single track road The Old House is protected from the rush of the outside world. Yet it is easily reached by road, rail and helicopter! The handful of residents and visitors enjoy spectacular vistas and easy public transport connections to Oban and Fort William within an hour; Glasgow, Stirling and Perth only an hour and a half by road.

The comfort and facilities at The Old House make it a pleasure to stay. The ground floor provides an extra-large farmhouse kitchen opening onto a spacious living area, and views that stretch for miles in every direction. Wild deer can be readily seen on the hills and sometimes in the garden! Eagles and Buzzards soar high above; hosts of smaller birds visit the quiet garden space in front of The Old House. A further 7 acres of enclosed open ground with tree plantings surround the property.

Dogs
Thankfully Scotland is extremely dog friendly and you are welcome to roam anywhere with well-behaved dogs. It’s best to keep them well under control when close to livestock, so always carry a lead and a poop bag! The six or so acres around The Old House are reasonably secure although it is up to you to define the level of freedom that your best friend should enjoy! Most pubs are dog friendly, though generally restaurants and shops are not.
